How did I get into the Eurovision Song Contest?
My love for Eurovision began when I was fifteen, after my German teacher showed us videos from the 2016 contest in class. I was instantly hooked! As a lifelong theatre kid I was immediately drawn in by the glitter and glamour of the contest.
At what point did I consider myself a Eurofan?
I searched out the contest on Tumblr shortly after I first learned about it, and immediately found a thriving community. I joined a Discord server with lots of other fans–including That Eurovision Site’s own Janek–and threw myself headfirst into the culture and friendship that I found there.
How has my life changed since becoming a Eurofan?
Learning about the contest exposed me to histories, languages, politics, and cultures that I’d never thought about before. I started learning languages as a hobby as a result of Eurovision, and this has evolved into a love of languages and linguistics that I didn’t pursue academically but do use for fun. I also wrote multiple times about the politics of Eurovision for my undergraduate degree in university.
What are my favorite Eurovision songs and countries?
Norway finds itself in my qualifiers list year after year, going all the way back to the 2000s, so I would definitely say that it’s my favorite Eurovision country. I also enjoy Armenia’s and Lithuania’s entries pretty consistently.
As for my favorite songs:
- 🇧🇪 Belgium (2016) Laura Tesoro with “What’s the Pressure”
- 🇩🇰 Denmark (2013) Emmelie de Forest with “Only Teardrops”
- 🇳🇴 Norway (2014) Carl Espen with “Silent Storm”
- 🇺🇦 Ukraine (2004) Ruslana with “Wild Dances”
- 🇱🇻 Latvia (2016) Justs with “Heartbeat”
What are my favorite national final entries?
Honestly, I am not usually a NF watcher, although that will change this year as I report for the site! However, here are a few that I’ve come across over the years and really enjoyed.
- 🇸🇪 Loreen with “Statements” (Melodifestivalen 2017)
- 🇦🇱 YII Limani with “Shiu” (Festivali i Këngës 2016)
- 🇳🇴 KEiiNO with “Monument” (Melodi Grand Prix 2021)
What am I looking forward to in the next Eurovision season?
As I always am, I’m so excited to meet a new group of artists and watch the camaraderie blossom between the entrants. I find a lot of new music through Eurovision and can’t wait to see who I discover this year.
