What did some of our team members have to say about their thoughts on Selecția Națională?

Rory: When Romania announced it was coming back to Eurovision, I was thrilled as the signs pointed towards a new relationship between record labels and TVR. But listening to the songs that have made the final, I realise I should have tempered my expectations a little. There’s nothing in there that is explicitly BAD, rather it’s just the quality needs to grow over time. So long as Romania can at least get back into the final, then I think we’ll see TVR come back again but I’m just nervous we won’t get that far.

George (Olivia): It reminds me of 2000s Avril Lavigne vibes, and I love that! It’s so fun and catchy, a perfect comeback for Romania. I think the vocals need some improvement, but I really like the song. To be honest, Romania has some decent participants this year.

Romania’s Eurovision Journey

Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of semi-finals, Romania found their stride and were present in every Eurovision final until 2018. Romania’s best result is third place, scored twice in 2005 and 2010 respectively.

In 2023, Romania was represented by Theodor Andrei with his song – “D.G.T. (Off and On)”. Performing at the second semi-final in Liverpool, Romania failed to qualify for the final. At the close of voting in the semi-final, Romania finished joint last, scoring 0 points from the televote.
