๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ AVROTROS will decide on 2027 Eurovision participation by early September

Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS has confirmed a decision will be made on Eurovision participation at the 2027 Contest “no later than early September”.

AVROTROS to make a decision by September

AVROTROS has confirmed that they will make a decision on their Eurovision 2027 participation no later than early September. A spokesperson for the Dutch broadcaster told the news site NU.nl that any decision on participation of The Netherlands in the Contest due to be held in Bulgaria will be announced in the coming months.

The statement came after AVROTROS decided not to participate in the 2026 edition of the Contest in Vienna, due in part to the continued participation of Israeli broadcaster KAN. AVROTROS joined broadcasters from Spain, Iceland, Ireland and Slovenia in withdrawing from the contest before the 2026 edition.

AVROTROS may have withdrawn from the 2026 Contest, however NPO, the governing body of the Dutch public broadcasters, made the decision to still show the contest from Vienna. The Song Contest was kept in its traditional slot on main channel NPO1. The broadcast was not produced by AVROTROS, and was instead made by NOS Evenementen and NTR.

The statement also follows further clarification from other broadcasters from within the Netherlands. Dutch broadcaster MAX, another member of the Omroep, said earlier in the year that should AVROTROS decide to stay out of Eurovision in 2027, they would be willing to handle participation. In a statement provided to the AD, MAX Director-General Jan Slagter said this would only happen if non-participation was guaranteed.

This new statement from AVROTROS also confirms that Canada’s announced debut at the Contest “has not changed anything” for the Dutch decision.

Netherlands’ Eurovision journey

The Netherlands are one of the founding countries of the ESC, having performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of โ€œDe Vogels van Hollandโ€ is unknown, the Netherlands have garnered 5 wins. Their most recent win came in 2019, seeing them host the 2021 contest after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to Covid. However, the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest ever non qualification streak in the semi-final era – they missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005 and 2012.

Claude represented the Netherlands in 2025 with the song “C’est La Vie”. Competing in the first semi-final, he eventually qualified for the final in Basel. In the final, the Netherlands would eventually finish in 12th place with 175 points. 133 of these points came from the juries, while the remaining 42 came from the televote.
