The future of Spain’s participation in Eurovision 2027 could become clearer today, as RTVE’s Board of Directors is due to discuss whether the country will return to the Contest following its withdrawal in 2026.
RTVE to discuss Eurovision 2027 return
According to Catalan broadcaster RAC1, RTVE’s Board of Directors is meeting this morning to discuss Spain’s participation in Eurovision 2027.
RTVE withdrew from the 2026 Contest after the EBU decided to maintain Israel’s participation. Spain was one of five countries to withdraw from the competition, alongside Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands and Slovenia.
The broadcaster must now decide whether to return to Eurovision in 2027 or remain outside the Contest for a second consecutive year.
For now, RTVE has not publicly confirmed what its position will be.
Spain is not the only country yet to decide
Spain is not the only one of the five 2026 boycotting broadcasters whose plans for 2027 remain unclear.
In August, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS confirmed that it would not participate in Eurovision 2027, after deciding that the changes recently introduced by the EBU did not give it enough confidence that the Contest’s neutral character had been restored.
AVROTROS also returned responsibility for the Netherlands’ Eurovision participation to the NPO. Since then, several Dutch broadcasters have ruled themselves out of taking on the role of organising the country’s participation, while production company Talpa has offered to organise a national final.
The NPO has not yet publicly confirmed whether the Netherlands will ultimately participate in Eurovision 2027.
Meanwhile, Iceland’s RÚV, Ireland’s RTÉ and Slovenia’s RTVSLO have also yet to announce their plans for next year’s Contest.
If RTVE decides to return, Spain would once again compete as one of the Big Five and would be automatically qualified for the Grand Final.
Spain’s Eurovision journey
Spain debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with Conchita Bautista’s “Estando Contigo”. The country earned its first win in 1968 with Massiel’s “La La La”, and won again in 1969 with Salome’s “Vivo Cantando” in an infamous four-way tie. Although they have yet to win again, Spain earned several 2nd place finishes, most famously with Mocedades’ “Eres tu” in 1973 and Anabel Conde’s “Vuelve conmigo” in 1996.
In 2025, Spain selected Melody. As part of the Big 5, she did not need to qualify for the Grand Final from the semi-finals. At the close of voting, her song “Esa Diva” finished 24th, with a total of 37 points. Of these, 27 points came from the jury, whilst 10 came from the televote. Spanish broadcaster RTVE withdrew from the 2026 Contest due to the continued participation of Israel.
