A couple of weeks after submissions for Sweden’s Eurovision 2027 selection, Melodifestivalen closed; local media quickly began speculating about who would participate in next year’s competition. Kicking off the rumour mill this season is E.M.D.
A return after reuniting in Mello
The news of the trio’s return was first reported by Swedish media newspaper Aftonbladet.
E.M.D. is a trio consisting of Erik Segerstedt, Mattias Andréasson and Danny Saucedo. They were formed after their participation in Swedish Idol, where they released three studio albums, and have even won Song of the Year in the Swedish Grammys in 2009.
The trio is not new to Mello, having made their debut in the competition, where they participated with “Baby Goodbye”, which managed to make it to the final, where they placed third. Since then, the trio has been involved in the competition in numerous ways, whether it’s Danny hosting, Erik participating (either as a solo artist or part of a duo), or Mattias being part of the songwriting team
The hype of the trio potentially returning to the competition has been strong, especially since they reunited in the Melodifestivalen final earlier this year, where they performed with KAJ, where they performed as part of their interval act, paying homage to trios that have graced the Melodifestivalen stage.
The trio’s schedule for 2027 is already looking jam-packed, as they will be starting a string of shows at Cirkus in Stockholm, which will premiere on February 6. Looking through the dates of the shows, there is a convenient gap between February 28 and March 18, which would allow them to participate in the fifth heat of Melodifestivalen and perform at Strawberry Arena should they go ‘Direkt Til Finalen’
SVT is set to reveal the names of the participants of Melodifestivalen 2027 later in the year.
Sweden’s Eurovision journey
In 1958, Sweden made their debut in the Eurovision Song Contest, with Alice Babs representing them with the song “Lilla stjärna” which placed fourth. Since their debut, the Scandinavian nation has managed to win seven times (1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015 and 2023).
In 2026, Melodifestivalen was won by FELICIA, singing “My System”. FELICIA qualified for the Grand Final of Eurovision in Vienna, maintaining Sweden’s near perfect track record from the semi-finals. The country has only narrowly lost out on a place in the Grand Final once, in 2010. At the close of voting in the grand final, FELICIA received 51 points, finishing in 20th place. 35 points were given by the juries, while she received 16 points by televoters.
