🇮🇹 TES Preview: Simplistic and beautiful for Mahmood & Blanco

On the sixth day of rehearsals for Eurovision 2022, we not only experienced second rehearsals from acts in both the first and second semi-finals, but also the first rehearsals of the Big Five countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The second of these to rehearse today was host nation Italy, who are represented by Mahmood & Blanco.

Mahmood & Blanco’s first rehearsal

The second of the Big Five acts to take to the Eurovision 2022 stage at the Pala Alpitour in Turin was Italy’s Mahmood & Blanco. They will sing the song “Brividi” at Eurovision 2022 after they were selected to represent Italy through Festival di Sanremo in February.

Due to prior commitments, Blanco was unable to attend today’s rehearsal. There was a stand-in for Blanco during the rehearsal.

Following Mahmood & Blanco’s first rehearsal a clip of their rehearsal was posted on TikTok. The clip showed them before and after they took to the Eurovision stage for the first time. The clip also gave us some insight into how well their rehearsal went.

There is a grand piano on stage according to the Live blog. Mahmood and his stand-in are surrounded by lights. The live blog also states that Mahmood’s vocals are very good and will provide a goosebump moment on the Saturday night. This is a performance that as the host nation Italy can be extremely proud of. For styling Mahmood is wearing a long black leather coat alongside some white sunglasses.

What did we think of Italy’s first rehearsal?

About Mahmood & Blanco

Mahmood & Blanco are this year’s Sanremo winners and Italy’s Eurovision representatives. Italy. Mahmood has experience with Eurovision, finishing second at the contest in 2019 with “Soldi“. Blanco is an Italian singer and rapper with multiple number ones to his name in Italy. For Sanremo and Eurovision 2022 the two sing together on “Brividi”.

Italy’s Eurovision Journey

Reigning winners Italy has participated in the contest 46 times since it began in 1956. In addition to 2021, they also won in 1964 with Gigliola Cinquetti’s “Non ho l’eta” and in 1990 with Toto Cutugno’s “Insieme: 1992”.

Italy took an extended break from the contest from 1994 to 2011 (returning once in 1997). They became a member of the Big Five upon their return and have only missed the top 10 twice since. They finished second twice: in 2011 (with Raphael Gualazzi’s “Madness of Love”) and in 2019 (with Mahmood’s “Soldi”). Italy also notched third place in 2015 with Il Volo’s “Grande Amore”, which won the televote.

Perhaps the most iconic Italian Eurovision entry is Domenico Modugno’s “Nel blu dipinto di blu” – better known as “Volare” – which placed third in 1958. It was a success in the American charts and won the first ever Grammy award for Song of the Year.
