As Romania prepares for its participation at Eurovision 2023, the 12 competing artists at Selecția Națională 2023 have been announced, alongside their respective song titles.
Who is competing at Selecția Națională 2023?
It had been announced earlier in December that 84 songs had been submitted to Romania’s broadcaster TVR for Selecția Națională 2023. Now, these songs have been whittled down to twelve. These songs will compete in one final, that will take place on February 11th, 2023.
The competing artists and song titles are:
|Aledaida||“Bla Bla Bla”|
|Andrada Popa||“No Time for Me”|
|Andreea D Folclor Orchestra||“Periniţa mea”|
|Deiona||“Call on Me”|
|JaxMan||“Bad & Cool”|
|Ocean Drive||“Take You Home”|
|Steven Roho x Gabriella x Formaţia Albatros||“Lele”|
|Theodor Andrei||“D.G.T. (Off and On)”|
Following the announcement of the entries, the internal jury which pared down eligible entries was revealed. The jury was made of a number of industry professionals, including radio DJs, festival organisers and Romania’s Head of Delegation, Mihai Predescu. Any artists who wish to appeal the decision have 24 hours to submit their case to TVR.
In addition to this, TVR announced the format for this year’s selection. Unlike last year, this year’s edition of Selecția Națională will use an exclusive public vote to determine the winner.
Romania’s Eurovision journey
Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of semi-finals, Romania found their stride and were present in every Eurovision final until 2018. Romania’s best result is third place, scored twice in 2005 and 2010 respectively.
In 2022, Romania was represented by WRS with his song – “Llámame”. Performing at the second semi-final in Turin, Romania qualified for the final for the first time since 2017. At the close of voting in the final, Romania finished 18th in a field of 25, scoring 65 points.
