With Belgium’s national selection for Eurovision, Eurosong 2023, fast approaching, the professional jury taking part in the show has been revealed.

Big names to appear on professional jury

According to Belgium news website Songfestival.be, a 15-person professional jury will be used during the selection. These include faces well-known to the Eurovision community. Laura Tesoro and Jérémie Makiese, who represented Belgium in 2016 and 2022 respectively, will appear on the panel. As well as this, Eurovision winner Alexander Rybak is also set to participate. The final recognisable name is Nikki de Jager, who hosted the Contest in 2021.

The remaining names are music professionals who work across Belgium in the radio industry. As well as this, Leslie Cable, who is the Head of Delegation for Wallonian broadcaster RTBF will also be part of the jury. Of the 15-person professional jury, only Tesoro, Makiese, de Jager and Rybak will appear onstage. The remaining eleven members will cast their votes backstage.

Belgium’s Eurovision journey

Belgium was one of the debutant countries at the beginning of the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956. Back in 1956, countries could submit two songs, and for Belgium that year, ‘Messieurs les noyes de la Seine’ by Fud Leclerc and ‘Le plus beau jour de ma vie’ by Mony Marc represented the nation. To this day we do not know the final results of Eurovision 1956.

Belgium have taken part in every Eurovision Song Contest since 1956; however they have only ever won once; in 1986 with Sandra Kim singing the song ‘J’amie la vie’, scoring 176 points. In 2022, Belgium was represented by Jérémie Makiese with the song “Miss You”. Makiese came 19th scoring 64 points in the Grand Final.
