🇵🇹 TES Previews: Who is Mimicat?

Eurovision in Liverpool is now less than a month away. In the run-up to rehearsals we will be getting to know a little more about this year’s artists, their discography and their Eurovision journey so far. The next act we will be previewing is Portugal’s Mimicat.

Mimicat’s Eurovision journey so far….

Mimicat was selected to represent Portugal through the national final Festival Da Canção 2023. She made it through a field of 20 to represent the nation with their song “Al Coração”

Mimicat will perform fifth in the first half of the first Eurovision 2023 semi-final on May 9th. You can check out Mimicat’s song here

Mimicat has performed live at the the Barcelona Eurovision Party, Pre-Party ES in Madrid, and the London Eurovision Party. While in London, Rory got a chance to speak to her about their Eurovision experience so far.

Who is Mimicat?

Mimicat, which is the stage name for Marisa Isabel Lopes Mena. She has been singing since the age of nine, but really came about on the music scene in 2014.

In 2014 Mimicat released her debut album “For You” – which recieved a lot of positive reviews in Portugal.

Later in 2016 Mimicat released the singles “Saviour and “Stay Strong” which were the lead singles on her second album. “Back In Town” – which was released in 2017 and charted at number 43 in the Portuguese album charts.

Prior to kickstarting her career as Mimicat, she actually participated in Festival Da Canção back in 2001 with the song “Izamena”, however did not progress past the semi-final round of that edition.

Prior to applying for Festival Da Canção, Mimicat made a return to music in 2021 and released two non album singles which are “Tudo ao ar” and “Mundo ao Contrário” – the latter being a collaboration with fellow singer Filipe Gonçalves.

Mimicat’s Eurovision 2023 song “Ai Coração” was written by Mimicat herself alongside Luís Pereira.

Portugal’s Eurovision Journey

Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 53 times – appearing the final 44 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.

Portugal’s most recent participation was with MARO with the song “saudade, saudade”. MARO managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, she finished 9th, after receiving 207 points from the jury and the televote.
