Dutch news outlet RTL Boulevard has reported that an independent investigation has been launched into the EBU over events that took place during the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö.
Looking into unsafe working environment
RTL has stated that the investigation over the events in Malmö pertain to the allegations of an unsafe working atmosphere that hung over last month’s contest. The allegations of such an environment come from 13 delegations; with Ireland, Portugal, and Switzerland being three known to voiced their displeasure to the EBU.
Looking towards next year’s contest, it was reported that Norway was one of the countries who have already participated in the investigation; further eluding that their participation in future contests is dependent on actions being taken by the EBU to address its concerns. At time of writing the Nordic nation has yet to confirm it will be in Switzerland next year.
The investigation will consist of questioning the participants of the 2024 contest to understand their personal experiences of what it was like in Malmö. All of these details stated by RTL have been confirmed by the EBU.
While it has not been stated by RTL or the EBU what exact events have prompted such an investigation it is likely that the incidents surrounding The Netherlands’ disqualification. Dutch AVROTROS have continued to voice their opposition to the handling of the situation that happened with Joost, and have made complaints directly to the EBU with regards to the atmosphere that existed backstage.
