🇳🇱 Cornald Maas comments that ‘big names’ secretly register for Eurovision 2025

After revealing that the selection committee in charge of selecting the Dutch Eurovision 2025 entry has now started evaluating the submissions received, Dutch commentator and selection committee member Cornald Maas has provided an update on how the selection is taking shape.

Big names secretly register for the Eurovision Song Contest

The update in regards to the Dutch selection was revealed when Cornald Maas appeared on fellow selection committee member Hila Noorzai on the talk show Eva.

During their appearance, it was mentioned that the Dutch selection for Eurovision 2025 could be a ‘piece of cake’ as big names are still secretly registering for the selection, where Cornald mentioned:

Also from people of name and fame, who may now say that they do not want to participate, but secretly do register.

Since the opening of the submissions, numerous Dutch artists have expressed their interest in representing The Netherlands in Basel. With Hila Noorzai commenting that  “we’d be happy to call” Anouk, but Cornald mentions “we don’t call the artists ourselves”.

The submission to find the Dutch entry for next year’s competition is still open. Artists, composers, songwriters, producers, and record labels are invited to submit an authentic, distinctive and competitive song. AVROTROS is accepting submissions until Friday the 22nd of November 23:59 CET, with interested parties able to send entries via songfestival@avrotros.nlsongfestival@avrotros.nl More information about the procedure and conditions can be found here.

After the closing of the submission period, the committee will make their first selections, and will then invite some artists to perform their proposal for the committee live, with the broadcaster expected to select their representative in early 2025.

The members of the selection committee are as follows:

  • Jacqueline Govaert
  • Jaap Reesema
  • Carolien Borgers
  • Hila Noorzai
  • Cornald Maas
  • Sander Lantinga

Recently appointed Head of Delegation Claudia van der Pas will also attend selection committee meetings, but will not have a right to vote to select the Dutch representative.

The Netherlands’ Eurovision Journey

The Netherlands is one of the founding countries of the ESC, having performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of “De Vogels van Holland” is unknown, the Netherlands has garnered 5 wins, with their most recent in 2019. However, the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest-ever non-qualification streak in the semi-final era – they missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005 and 2012.

Joost Klein represented the Netherlands in 2024 with the song “Europapa”. While he was ultimately disqualified, he would have made it to the final, placing second in his semifinal with 182 points.
