Eurovision 2025 is shaping up to be the year of national finals, as it is being reported that Armenia too will return to a national selection format to select its representative for Basel. As reported by ESC Discord on November 22nd, once confirmed by AMPTV, this will be Depi Evratesil’s fourth edition, after having been used in 2017, 2018, and 2020.
Depi Evratesil’s potential return to Armenia
AMPTV may be bringing back Depi Evratesil, which has not been used since the 2020 Eurovision season. Since the return of Eurovision after the COVID-19 pandemic–and the return of Armenia after opting out of the 2021 contest–Armenia has opted for internal selections and has seen reasonable success, qualifying for the final in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Their most recent entry, “Jako”, placed eighth in the grand final, and two years earlier, Rosa Linn placed 20th but quickly found viral success on TikTok.
Depi Evratesil selections, on the other hand, have not had a significant track record of success. Of the three entries selected through this format–Artsvik’s “Fly with Me”, Sevan Khanagyan’s “Qami”, and Athena Manoukian’s “Chains on You”–only “Fly with Me” made it to the grand final, placing eighteenth. “Qami” placed fifteenth in its semifinal, failing to qualify, while the 2020 contest was canceled before Athena Manoukian had the chance to perform.
In the most recent edition of the contest, Depi Evratesil (or “Towards Eurovision”) was used to select both a song and artist; however, in its original form, only an artist was selected, with “Fly with Me” being internally selected after the fact. It’s not yet known which format this year’s version will follow once confirmed.
Armenia’s Eurovision Journey
In 2006, Armenia made their debut into the Eurovision Song Contest, where André represented the nation with his entry “Without Your Love”, placing 8th overall. Since their debut, Armenia has participated 16 times, 13 of which saw them make the Grand Final. Their best result, reached in 2008 and 2014, is 4th place; in 2008, Sirusho and “Qélé Qélé”, and in 2014, Aram MP3 with “Not Alone”.
French-Armenian band Ladaniva represented Armenia at the most recent contest, where they ultimately scored eighth in the grand final. Between the televote and the juries, “Jako” received 138 total points.
