Two months after Danish broadcaster confirmed they would not withdraw from Eurovision 2026, preparations for next year’s Dansk Melodi Grand Prix are already well underway. Over the weekend, during the Danish OGAE’s annual meeting in Herlev, DR revealed fresh details.
A fresh and modern direction
According to Good Evening Europe, DMGP producer Erik Struve Hansen announced that the 2026 edition, set to take place on 14 February in Frederikshavn, will feature a brand-new stage, logo, and visual identity. The goal is to give the contest a more modern and innovative look and feel.
DR hopes to attract younger audiences by focusing on strong songs, standout performers, and polished productions that can easily transition to the Eurovision stage in Vienna.
Eight entries and familiar faces
A total of eight songs will compete in next year’s national final. Some have already been selected, while others are still in the works. The lineup will include both returning DMGP participants and well-known Danish artists making their first appearance.
This year, DR is putting a greater emphasis on an artist-first approach, choosing the performers before tailoring the songs and stage concepts around them. The idea is to create complete, Eurovision-ready packages.
Fan and international involvement
For the first time, DR is involving Danish Eurovision fans directly in the song selection process. A focus group of eight fans will provide feedback and help shape the final entries. In addition, a smaller international focus group will offer comments on selected songs to bring in an outside perspective.
Format, jury and hosts
The competition and voting format will remain unchanged: results will be determined by a 50/50 split between jury and public voting.
The jury will consist of Danish and international professionals from the fields of music and performance, all with a genuine link to Eurovision or DMGP.
DR will announce the two hosts, one male and one female, on Tuesday, noting that one of them will be “a surprise.” Tickets for the show go on sale next Friday.
Denmark’s Eurovision journey
Denmark first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1957 and notched up their first win in 1963 with Grethe and Jørgan Ingmann’s “Dansevise”. Denmark later earned two third-place finishes in 1988 and 1989 but was then relegated three times in 1994, 1996, and 1998. They finally achieved their second victory in 2000 with the Olsen Brothers’ “Fly on the Wings of Love”, and have missed the Grand Final eight times since the introduction of the semi-finals. A six-year qualification streak from 2008 culminated in its third win in 2013 with Emmelie de Forrest’s “Only Teardrops”.
Sissal represented Denmark in 2025 with “Hallucination”. She qualified for the final, breaking Denmark’s five-year non-qualification streak. She would eventually finish in 23rd place, earning 47 points. Of these, 45 came from juries, while 2 came from the televote.
