🇱🇺 “Mother Nature” at the centre of musical similarity debate

Luxembourg’s Eurovision 2026 entry, “Mother Nature” by Eva Marija, has started a lively discussion among music fans and industry commentators about how much a Eurovision song can resemble another piece of music before it crosses the line into improper similarity.

How the debate emerged

Shortly after “Mother Nature” was chosen to represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026, fans on social media and music platforms began discussing the resemblance to Birdy’s pop hit “Keeping Your Head Up“, especially in certain melodic motifs and overall feel. These comparisons quickly spread online, with mashups and listener discussions gaining traction.

Official response

In response to the growing conversation, RTL has confirmed it is consulting with partners, including the European Broadcasting Union, the composers, the artist herself, and the French music rights society SACEM, to review the concerns raised, while maintaining that “Mother Nature” was created independently and was not intentionally modelled after another song. In a statement, RTL’s Eurovision media manager emphasised the transparent approach to these discussions and highlighted that the writing took place in a songwriting camp without using Birdy’s track as a template.

New Head of Delegation Elisabeth Conter in an interview

While she is very happy with the result, she emphasised:

You don’t know until the last moment what it will look like in the end. But we are now very, very happy with the result,”

Luxembourg will compete in the first half of the second semi-final on May 14.

Luxembourg’s Eurovision Journey

Luxembourg first made its debut in the first edition of the Contest in 1956, with their first entries being “Ne crois pas” and “Les Amants de minuit”, both performed by Michèle Arnaud. Since the first Contest, Luxembourg has competed a total of 38 times. Their best result was finishing in 1st place five times – in 1961, 1965, 1972, 1973 and 1983 respectively.

Luxembourg’s latest participation came in Basel in 2025. Laura Thorn represented Luxembourg with the song “La poupée monte le son”, qualifying in seventh place. In the Grand Final, Luxembourg finished 22nd, receiving 47 points: 23 from the national juries, and 24 from the televoters.
