What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from Melodi Grand Prix?

Euan (Jonas): Perfect 2000s pop-rock throwback without being leaning too much into the nostalgia. Feels fun, polished, and accessible.

Kittens (Hedda): If you’ve been following my comments so far you’ll know I’m a sucker for a cute little bass guitar lick, so this was the obvious choice for me in this selection. It’s nothing new musically, but is catchy, and hopefully it’ll have some great staging to give it the extra lift it needs – it’s lacking something a bit at the moment, but still one of the best in the offerings for Norway.

Georga (Silke): MGP feels weak once again. “Forevermore” is currently my 3rd place, but honestly, I don’t like it that much. It’s typical Europop and not the kind of entry that would easily qualify Norway for the final, or achieve a strong result if it did. Still, I find myself grooving to it.

And what were the teams thoughts on the national final as a whole?

Rory: Well, once again Norway is bringing us a rather big bag of ‘meh’ for me. I really want to like Norway’s offerings but very often it’s just too polished for it to be endearing. I think there is one standout song in this line-uop – ya ya ya, I do – but I just want NRK to just lean into their diversity more. Bring us back to the 2019 MGP era, please!!!

Samantha: I think that as a whole MGP is ok but could be better. None of the songs scream Eurovision winner. Whilst I appreciate some of the entries I haven’t had any on repeat. I wasn’t a fan of the whole duel situation either I just feel like it was unnecessary. If you want the people to have a say in who makes it into the competition then why are we only reducing that to one act ? With all that being said there are a couple of standouts (I’m mainly thinking of Jonas Lovv) where if the song is staged well could be make viewers want to sit up and pay attention to Norway. To sum it up, I think all these songs are going to have to rely on great staging to make Norway standout.

What is Melodi Grand Prix?

Melodi Grand Prix is the Norwegian method of selection for Eurovision. This national final selection method is over 60 years old. The only year where Melodi Grand Prix has not taken place was 2002, when Norway were relegated from the Eurovision Song Contest. Melodi Grand Prix had undertaken a few different formats. The changes in format have mainly taken place in the last few years, since 2020.

Norway’s Eurovision Journey

The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 62 times, and made the Grand Final 59 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.

Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Kyle Alessandro with the song “Lighter”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 18th in the Grand Final, receiving 89 points, 22 of which from the jury and 67 from televoters.
