Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR has welcomed the rejection of the โ200 francs is enough!โ initiative, following a national referendum held on 8 March.
Strong support for public broadcasting
In a statement, SRG said the result reflects public support for a strong, independent broadcaster that serves all regions of Switzerland. The broadcaster highlighted that voters backed a media service that remains regionally rooted, digitally focused and relevant to everyday life. SRG Board Chairman Jean-Michel Cina described the result as a โdecisive momentโ for the organisation, noting that the vote reaffirmed trust in the broadcaster and its role within Swiss society.
The โ200 francs is enough!โ initiative aimed to reduce the annual broadcasting fee from CHF 335 to CHF 200, which would have led to major funding cuts for SRG. Critics warned that such a reduction could have significantly impacted programming, jobs and cultural output across Switzerland.
SRG stated that the outcome provides stability for Switzerlandโs media landscape, ensuring the continuation of a diverse and multilingual public service broadcaster. The result also highlights the importance placed by voters on independent journalism and public media, particularly in an evolving digital environment.
Switzerland’s Eurovision journey
Switzerland both hosted and debuted in the inaugural Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Their first participation was successful, as they won with Lys Assia’s โRefrainโ. Since then, they have participated on 63 occasions, making the Grand Final 52 times.
Switzerlandโs most recent participation saw them being represented on home soil by Zoรซ Mรซ with her song โVoyageโ. At the end of voting in the final, it was revealed that Switzerland had earned 214 points from the juries and received nothing from televoters. This ultimately placed Switzerland 10th in the final.
