Icelandic public broadcaster RÚV have said Eurovision 2027 participation has been “barely discussed” by the broadcaster’s board. Stefán Jón Hafstein, Chairman of the RÚV board says that the organisation has not yet decided whether Iceland will participate in Eurovision next year. The next meeting of RÚV officials is scheduled for late September
RÚV Board “barely discussed” Eurovision participation
Chairman of the RÚV board, Stefán Jón Hafstein, says participation in the 2027 Contest has not yet been decided by the organisation. The statement from Stefán comes after the news that AVROTROS would not be returning to the Contest. The Dutch broadcaster confirmed this morning they would not participate in Eurovision 2027.
The next meeting of the RÚV board, where Eurovision could be discussed, is scheduled for late September. Stefán told the RÚV news platform that it is uncertain whether Iceland’s participation will be discussed at this meeting, as the agenda has not yet been finalised. The Chairman of the board said no deadline has been set for confirming participation. He states that the board’s decision from November to recommend the EBU exclude Israel from the Contest currently still stands.
Iceland’s RÚV were one of 5 broadcaster to not take part in the 2026 Contest in Vienna. The broadcaster neither participated, nor broadcast the 70th anniversary Contest following the EBU General Assembly Vote in December 2025.
Iceland’s Eurovision journey
Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.
VÆB represented Iceland in Basel in 2025 with their song “RÓA”. The duo qualified for the final, bringing Iceland back into the final for the first time since 2022. In the final, they would eventually finish in 25th place with 33 points; all of these were awarded by the televote. Following the 2025 EBU December General Assembly vote, Icelandic broadcaster RÚV withdrew from the Contest in protest of the continued participation of Israel.
