Estonia has confirmed their intention to participate in the 2027 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, due to be held in Burgas. Estonian broadcaster ERR announced they will compete in the contest in May.
ERR confirm Eesti Laul 2027
Estonia broadcaster ERR has announced the submission window for the country’s national final Eesti Laul is now open. Submissions will remain open until October 8th. The 12 song final of the Eesti Laul national selection is due to take place on January 30th 2027. Like in recent years, 3 songs will progress to a superfinal round before an eventual winner is selected. The full rules for the Contest can be found on the Eesti Laul website.
Songs competing in the national final will begin to be made public from November 27th 2026. The winner of the 2027 edition of Eesti Laul will be awarded the right to represent the nation at the 71st Eurovision Song Contest. The winning act has until February 8th to confirm whether they will participate in the Contest in Burgas. The offer to represent Estonia in Eurovision will be passed to Eesti Laul’s second place entry if the winner declines.
What is Eesti Laul?
For over a decade now Eesti Laul has showcased Estonian talent in a multi-stage format to select Estonia’s Eurovision entrant. Traditionally featuring two semi finals and a final, in recent years the show has been adapted year on year to feature quarter finals and wild card rounds. The winner is typically decided by a hybrid voting of juries and televotes. The final round of the Contest is the superfinal of usually three acts vying for the win. The winner of Eesti Laul is awarded the chance to represent Estonia in Eurovision.
Estonia’s Eurovision journey
Estonia has appeared at almost every Eurovision since their debut in 1994. They have won the contest once with Tanel Padar, Dave Benton and 2XL in 2001, singing “Everybody”. Other notable Estonian entrants include 3rd placer Sahlene with Runaway in 2002 and Ines with Once In A Lifetime in 2000, who placed 4th. More recently, their highest-placing entries have been Urban Symphony with RΓ€ndajad in 2009 and Ott Lepland with Kuula in 2012, both of which finished in 6th place, and Tommy Cash with “Espresso Macchiato” which finished in 3rd in the contest in Basel in 2025.
In 2026, Estonia elected to send 2005 Swiss representative Vanilla Ninja through Eesti Laul to the Contest with “Too Epic to be True”. They failed to qualify for the Grand Final, ultimately finishing in 11th place in the first semi-final with a total of 79 points. Of these, 46 came from the televote – while the remaining 33 came from the jury.
