Hungary could return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, following talks between the country’s public broadcaster and contest organisers.
Hungary offered reduced participation fee
Hungarian public media has confirmed that its acting CEO, Dr András Horváth, recently met with Eurovision organisers to discuss a potential return to the contest.
During the talks, Horváth indicated that the broadcaster’s new permanent leadership should make the decision on Eurovision participation. Hungarian public media is currently undergoing a period of restructuring.
The Eurovision organisers have also offered Hungary a significant reduction in its participation fee. They have extended the country’s deadline to confirm its participation until 7th December.
However, Hungary’s return is not yet confirmed. The Independent Public Media Board must first approve participation, before the broadcaster’s permanent management makes a final decision.
Hungary last participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019.
Hungary’s Eurovision History
Hungary tried to make their debut at Eurovision in 1993, but did not make it past the qualification round. A year later, they made their debut with Friderika and the entry “Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet?”, which placed 4th. Since then, Hungary has competed on 17 occasions, 14 of which saw them qualify for the final.
The country’s most recent participation was in 2019, when Joci Pápai participated with “Az én apám”, which placed 12th in the Semi-Final. Since then, Hungary has not participated in the competition.
