Norway’s “Queen of Kings” singer Alessandra is back with new music! The Eurovision 2023 representative has today released her new single “Head Over Water”.
About “Head Over Water”
Italian-Norwegian singer Alessandra has released her latest single “Head Over Water”. This new single is an up-beat pop song from Alessandra, with a deeper and more personal meaning within the lyrics. The song talks of the struggle of keeping positive when fighting back against the “suits and ties in power”. The accompanying music video is fun and colourful, and sees Alessandra dancing with people in the street and on the seafront.
Alessandra describes the song as “a song about freedom, self-acceptance, and the courage to be yourself. About breaking free from expectations and believing that love, unity and hope are stronger than fear and division”.
The lyrics to the chorus of “Head Over Water” read:
Been trying to keep my head over water
wipe my tears, find cover
from the wind
Im drowning in my hopes for tomorrow
But your hand on my shoulder
Leads the way
The new song was written by Alessandra herself, alongside Peppina Elsa Isabella Pällijeff, Joonas Parkkonen, Olve Flakne, Emilia Ora and Adrian Tangen Myhre. The track marks the start of a new era for Alessandra, as she begins releasing music as an independent artist.

Who is Alessandra?
Alessandra Mele, known professionally as Alessandra, is an Italian-Norwegian singer born in Pietra Ligure, Savona, in 2002. At the age of twelve, she won the fifth edition of VB Factor, a local talent show in the Val Bormida region. After graduating from high school in 2019, she relocated to Norway and moved in with her grandparents in Porsgrunn, before moving to Lillehammer to study at the Lillehammer Institute of Music Production and Industries.
In 2022, Alessandra competed in the seventh season of The Voice – Norges beste stemme. After her Blind Audition, she joined the team of coach Espen Lind. She was eliminated in the live shows. This year, it was announced that the singer would be taking part in Norway’s Skal vi danse dancing competition show.
Alessandra’s Eurovision history
In 2023, Alessandra was announced as one of the artists competing in Melodi Grand Prix 2023, the Norwegian national selection for Eurovision 2023. She performed her entry “Queen of Kings” in the first semi-final of the national selection, and was among the three acts from that semi-final that qualified for the final of MGP. She went on to win the competition, receiving the most points from both the public and the international jury, thereby winning the right to represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool. She performed in the first Semi-Final in the Contest in Liverpool, and qualified for the Grand Final.
In the Grand Final of the Contest in 2023, Alessandra performed in 20th spot in the running order. At the close of voting, “Queen of Kings” received 268 points. 52 of these came from the international juries, while 216 points were awarded by the public televote.
