Norwegian broadcaster NRK has received approximately 1,500 songs for Melodi Grand Prix 2027. However, dozens of these entries appear to have been generated entirely by artificial intelligence (AI).
NRK takes a firm stance on AI-generated submissions
Submissions for Norway’s Eurovision Song Contest 2027 national selection closed on 31st August. Speaking to NRK, Melodi Grand Prix project manager Mads Tørklep revealed that between 30 and 50 of the submitted entries are believed to be entirely AI-generated. This comes despite competition rules explicitly prohibiting such compositions.
Explaining the broadcaster’s position on AI-generated entries, Tørklep said:
There’s no point in having a music competition where a computer has done all the work.
Furthermore, Tørklep explained that most of those submitting AI-generated songs have been open about their use of the technology. Many of these entries also come from people who are not musicians themselves.
However, NRK has not ruled out the use of AI tools in other aspects of music production, these include inspiration and technical elements. Tørklep also acknowledged that the use of AI tools has become increasingly common within Norway’s music industry.
Meanwhile, NRK’s music team continues to review the submissions, led by musical director Tarjei Strøm. The team will select the entries that will compete in Melodi Grand Prix 2027. NRK has yet to announce the format and date of next year’s competition.
What is Melodi Grand Prix?
Melodi Grand Prix is the Norwegian method of selection for Eurovision. This national final selection method is over 60 years old. The only year where Melodi Grand Prix has not taken place was 2002, when Norway were relegated from the Eurovision Song Contest. Melodi Grand Prix had undertaken a few different formats. The changes in format have mainly taken place in the last few years, since 2020.
Norway’s Eurovision Journey
The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 62 times, and made the Grand Final 59 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.
Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Jonas Lovv with the song “Ya Ya Ya”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 14th in the Grand Final, receiving 134 points, 115 of which from the jury and 19 from televoters.
