The UK will participate at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, due to be held in Bulgaria. This will be the 69th time that the country has taken part in the contest.
BBC confirms participation in Bulgaria
In a press release published by the BBC on Tuesday (October 27th), the British broadcaster confirmed that the search has now begun to find the act set to represent the UK in Burgas in May. The BBC also confirmed that it would once again internally select the act and song, with no submissions window opening for interested acts to apply.
David May, who is leading the search for the act, said the BBC have high hopes to find a high-calibre act to represent the nation in Bulgaria. He said:
We intend to be represented by an outstanding current British act, backed up by the very best songwriting and production talent the UK music industry has to offer. We are looking for an act with tried and tested live performance experience and a song crafted in the UK by the very best home-grown talent. I saw first-hand in 2022 what one performance at Eurovision can do for an artist’s career. The opportunity is still very much there and it’s time the United Kingdom reached the top of the Eurovision scoreboard once again.
David May, who is serving as the BBC’s Eurovision Project Director, is being joined in the search by British Head of Delegation Andrew Cartmell. The selected act and song will be revealed before the submission deadline in mid-March. Meanwhile, all three live shows have been confirmed to air on BBC One for thè fifth year in a row.
It comes after a parliamentary inquiry was ordered into the UK’s poor results into the competition. Following three consecutive years of receiving no points from the public vote, MPs have confirmed they are looking into questions surrounding the selection process and what can be done to change the UK’s recent track record. It is unclear whether the inquiry has already had – or will have – an impact on the UK’s selection process for 2027.
United Kingdom’s Eurovision journey
The UK is one of the most successful countries in the Eurovision Song Contest. Debuting at the second edition of the Contest in 1957, the United Kingdom won the competition on five occasions. The most recent win for the UK was in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves, singing “Love Shine A Light”. The UK also holds the record for second-place finishes – currently at 16 and most recently with “Spaceman” by Sam Ryder in 2022. The UK hosted the contest on behalf of Ukraine in 2023, after Sam Ryder’s second-place result.
In 2026, Look Mum No Computer represented the UK in Vienna with his song “Eins Zwei Drei”. At the close of voting, the UK finished 25th in a field of 25, earning just one point. This one point came from the Ukrainian jury.
