Italy kicks off Festival di Sanremo – Night 1 Recap

Italy’s search for a Eurovision entry through the Sanremo Music Festival kicked off tonight!

Today was the first night of the Festival di Sanremo, which is the de facto national selection to choose Italy’s song for the Eurovision Song Contest. This is the first time that Sanremo has been held without an audience. That might have caused some sadness at first; however, the hosts made more than enough of the extra space. At times, we saw the hosts even skipping through the seats!

Bring In the Newcomers

In terms of the competition, tonight’s show had the first halves of both the Newcomers’ and the Big Artist sections. Kicking off the show was the Newcomers’ Section, of which two songs advanced to the semi-final – which are highlighted in bold.

  • Gaudiano“Polvere da sparo”
  • Elena Fraggi – “Che ne so”
  • Avincola – “Goal!”
  • Folcast“Scopriti”

Following that, we moved onto the main show for the night – an introduction to 13 of the 26 songs in the Big Artists section. Performing tonight were:

  • Arisa – “Potevi fare di più”

  • Aiello – “Ora”

The remaining songs in both the Newcomers and the Big Artists sections will be performed tomorrow (March 3rd).

Interval acts were in high supply as well tonight. Performances throughout the night included Diodato, who gave an emotional performance of his Eurovision song from 2020 – “Fai Rumore”. In addition, we also had appearances from both Matilda di Angelice and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a wide range of guests!
