TES In Depth: Azerbaijan’s Efendi with ‘Mata Hari’

Another day another Eurovision 2021 review. Next up we look at Azerbaijan’s Efendi with the song ‘Mata Hari’. To hear our in deth review of the song take a listen to the review below:

Efendi’s career so far!

Efendi has competed in several music competitions in Azerbaijan, most note-able would probably be her appearance on The Voice Azerbaijan in 2015 where she finished third. Efendi was supposed to represent her country in 2020 with the song ‘Cleopatra’. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic cancelling the contest in 2020, she will represent Azerbaijan with ‘Mata Hari’ this year instead.

Our opinions on Mata Hari

Jazzi

Opinion: I really enjoy listening to this song. I have seen some live performances that make me wonder if she has the confidence to pull off the dancing live, but these were in a small studio. I do think this will qualify at the moment but Semi Final 1 is so strong that there is slight doubt there for me.

Overall Ranking: 7th

Prediction: 5th-7th in the semi final at the moment. 12-16th in the final.

Rory

Opinion: “Mata Hari” is definitely a lot more contemporary and radio-friendly than Cleopatra was. I enjoy this more than last year’s entry. I also like how there is some actual Azerbaijani lyrics in this song, which has never happened before in the adult Contest. However, that’s where my positives for this song end. The song is generic and derivative of Efendi’s entry last year and I am entirely nonplussed by this song even being in the competition.

Overall Ranking: 26th

Prediction: 6th-10th place in the semi-final. 14th-19th place in the final.

Rosie

Opinion: I don’t dislike the song in and of itself, but Efendi is not an artist I feel comfortable supporting.

Overall Ranking: 38th

Prediction: A reasonably safe qualifier (probably 5th-8th place), with a mid-table result in the final.
