๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ RTVE to Make Special Announcement About Spain in Eurovision 2022

As the search for a host city continues in Italy, Spain is making waves regarding its participation in Eurovision 2022. Last Friday, the Spanish broadcaster RTVE stated that they will be making a special announcement related to the contest on July 22nd.

About RTVE’s Eurovision 2022 Announcement

The announcement will take place in the Spanish coastal city of Benidorm. It is currently unclear what the announcement will be, but there are a few theories.

According to Eurovoix, the location of Benidorm has sparked speculation that we could be seeing the return of the “Festival Internacional de la Cancion de Benidorm” for the first time since 2006. The festival itself is modelled after Italy’s famed Sanremo Music Festival and was first held in 1959.

This would also mark Spain’s return to a national final format after the internal selection of Blas Canto in 2020 and 2021.

For now, Eurovision fans will have to wait for RTVE’s official announcement on Thursday.

Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest

Spain debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with Conchita Bautista’s “Estando Contigo”. The country earned its first win in 1968 with Massiel’s “La La La”, and won again in 1969 with Salome’s “Vivo Cantando” in an infamous four-way tie. Although they have yet to win again, Spain earned several 2nd place finishes, most famously with Mocedades’ “Eres tu” in 1973 and Anabel Conde’s “Vuelve conmigo” in 1996.

Spain has been less successful in recent years. Although they achieved two 10th place finishes in 2012 and 2014, the country has not finished above 20th place since 2015, including one last-place in 2017. They finished 24th at the 2021 contest with 6 points from the jury and no televote points.
