Ukraine’s national broadcaster UA:PBC has announced that the submission window for the Ukrainian National Selection for Eurovision, also known as Vidbir, is now open. The announcement included the full list of rules and the format of Vidbir 2022. Songs can be submitted online. The winner will go to the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest in Turin.
What we know so far
The submission window for Vidbir is now open, with a deadline of January 10. This is the first Vidbir since the end of the partnership between UA:PBC and commercial broadcaster STB. It was announced in October that UA:PBC will be the sole producer of Vidbir 2022. The songs that get selected for the National Final will be announced on the UA:PBC website by January 24. Vidbir will be held in February, with the exact date still to be announced. The winner will be decided by a combined jury and public vote. It is unclear whether Vidbir will retain the semi-finals we have seen in previous years.
Ukraine’s Eurovision Journey
Ukraine is one of the most successful countries to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest. The country has scored seven top-five placements, with an extra three top-ten finishes. Ukraine won the Contest in 2004 with Ruslana’s “Wild Dances” and again in 2016 with Jamala’s “1944”. Jamala’s win made history for Ukraine, as it became the first ex-Soviet country to win the Contest more than once.
In 2021, Go_A represented Ukraine in the 65th edition of the Contest with their song “SHUM”. The band scored 364 points, finishing in fifth place.
