We now have another artist for Eurovision 2022, as Azerbaijan announced Nadir Rustamli will represent the nation in Turin. His song is yet to be confirmed, but will be released in March.
Who is Nadir Rustamli?
Nadir Rustamli is a popular artist in Azerbaijan, after winning the most recent series of O Ses Azerbaycan. In addition to winning, his coach was Eldar Gasimov – one half of Ell and Nikki, who won Eurovision in 2011. Aged just 22, Rustamli is also a skilled competitive singer, representing Azerbaijan at the Youthvision International Song Contest. At the Contest, Rustamli finished in a respectable second place.
Nadir’s selection was unveiled during Azerbaijan’s morning show “Sabahın xeyir, Azərbaycan”. Speaking about the decision, Azerbaijan’s Head of Delegation Isa Melikov said that already, 300 songs have been sent to the team. Now, of the 300, only six will make it to the final stage, with the final selected song revealed in March.
Azerbaijan’s Eurovision journey
Azerbaijan is a powerhouse in Eurovision, first debuting in 2008 with the song “Day After Day” by Elnur & Samir, finishing 8th. The country has since gone on to achieve five top-5 performances, including one win in 2011. Azerbaijan has a near perfect qualification record, only failing to make the final in 2018. Azerbaijan is also famous for its impressive on-stage performances. In 2021, Efendi represented the nation, who received 65 points and finished 20th with her song “Mata Hari.”
