With preparations for Eurovision well underway, Portugal’s entrant for the Contest – Maro – has revealed the backing singers that will join her on stage in Turin.
Familiar faces with Maro
On a post on Facebook, Portuguese broadcaster RTP revealed that Maro would continue to have five backing singers. This is similar to her performance of ‘saudade, saudade’ in the final of Festival da Canção, despite Maro hinting the staging would be ‘a bit different’ compared to the national selection.
The five backing singers joining Maro in Turin include Diana Castro, Carolina Leite, Milhanas, Beatriz Fonseca and Beatriz Pessoa. Fans of Festival da Canção will recognise both Milhanas and Diana Castro, as both women also competed in this year’s edition of the festival. Diana Castro placed 4th in the final with ‘Ginger Ale’, whilst Milhanas finished in 7th place with ‘Corpo de Mulher’.
Portugal’s Eurovision journey
Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 52 times – appearing the final 43 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Portugal’s most recent participation was with The Black Mamba with the song “Love Is On My Side” – the first song Portugal sent in the English language. The Black Mamba managed to qualify for the Grand Final finishing 12th, after receiving 153 points from the jury and the televote.
What do you make of Maro’s backing singers? Would you have preferred ‘Ginger Ale’ or ‘Corpo de Mulher’ to represent Portugal? Do you think Portugal can qualify for the final this year?
