🇲🇩 TRM opens submissions window for Eurovision 2023 selection

Moldova is officially kicking off its selection process for Eurovision 2023. Public broadcaster TRM has announced the opening of a submissions window for songs that could represent the nation in Liverpool.

TRM aiming for spring selection show

In a post on their website, TRM appealed for interested artists to submit an entry to the broadcaster. Those who wish to send a song in can do so electronically, or in paper form addressed to the broadcaster itself. The deadline for submissions ends on January 16th at 5pm local time.

TRM also announced its provisional plan for its selection process in the New Year. Once the submissions window is closed, the selection will move in three phases. From January 17th to 28th, all submitted entries will be listened to. From January 28th to February 5th, live auditions will be held. The auditions will be broadcast on TRM, with a professional jury casting 100% of the vote. The final will then be held in the week between February 25th and March 5th. The show will once again be broadcast live to the country, with the winner being decided in a 50/50 split between the jury and the televote.

Regarding performers, Moldovan citizens are exclusively allowed to participate at the national selection. International artists may also perform as part of collaborations. However, the main performer should be from Moldova. In addition to this, Moldovan songwriters must make up to 50% of the composition team.

It should be noted that TRM does hold the capacity to cancel the national selection and internally select an artist if the quality of submitted songs is poor. This happened in 2022 when, after the broadcast of live auditions, Zdob si Zdub were internally selected.

Moldova’s Eurovision journey

Moldova is relatively new to the Eurovision Song Contest, joining in 2005. Their debut entry, Zdob si Zdub, finished in 6th place, which had remained their highest scoring entry up until 2017. This was thanks to the Sunstroke Project performing ‘Hey Mamma’, finishing in 3rd place. At the close of voting, Moldova received 374 points.

In 2022, Zdob si Zdub came back to the Eurovision stage with the Advahov Brothers and represented Moldova at the Contest in Turin. Performing their song “Trenuletul”, Moldova qualified for the final and finished in 7th place. Following the jury and televote points, Moldova had received 253 points.
