With the submissions due to close tomorrow, it has been revealed that the deadline for submitting an application to Sanremo Giovani has been extended until 7 PM CEST on the 19th of October, Rai has announced.
Submissions now open until Thursday
After the now amended deadline, the multi phased selection process will take place, after which the contest will take place at the Sanremo Casino Theatre on 13th December, and will be broadcast live on Rai 1 and Rai Radio 2.
Sanremo Giovani is a contest held prior to the main Sanremo Music Festival, which gives younger and newer artists the opportunity to participate in the festival.
Prior to the 2019 edition of Sanremo, the newcomers’ section was usually included as part of the contest, with a separate section in Sanremo for big, established artists. 2020 would briefly return to this format, but Sanremo Giovani looks here to stay.
Previous entrants in the contest include Mahmood, who in 2018’s Sanremo Giovani won the right to compete in the following year’s Sanremo, which he would go onto win with ‘Soldi’.
Last year’s winner was gIANMARIA, who was joined in the 2023 edition of Sanremo by five more emerging artists, including Colla Zio and Olly.
Italy’s Eurovision Journey
Italy have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest since the very beginning and have always been considered a powerhouse in the contest. Italy have won the contest on three occasions in 1964, 1990 and 2021. Italy withdrew after 1997, returning again in 2011 with Raphael Gualazzi who sang ‘Madness Of Love’. Raphael placed second in the 2011 Eurovison Song Contest after scoring 189 points.
Italy’s most recent entry in 2023 was “Due Vite” by Marco Mengoni. At the close of voting, Italy scored a total of 350 points in the Eurovision 2023 Grand Final, placing 4th. Of these, 176 points came from the juries, whilst the remaining 174 points came from the televote.
