Yesterday, Portuguese broadcaster RTP revealed that Festival da Canção 2024 will occur across 3 nights: the 24th of February, the 2nd of March and the 9th of March.
Festival da Canção 2024
This year, Festival da Canção will have two semi-finals leading into the grand final. The first semi-final will occur on the 24th of February, with the second semi-final one week later on the 2nd of March. Then, the grand final will take place on the 9th of March. After starting with 809 applications, 20 songs will take part in the national final, written by these composers. These composers were used to conduct the semi-final draw that took place in December. The artists will be revealed at a later date.
Portugal’s Eurovision History
Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 54 times – appearing in the final 45 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.
Portugal’s most recent participation was with Mimicat with the song “Ai, coração”. Mimicat managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, she finished in 23rd place. She received a total of 59 points, of which 43 points came from the jury and 16 points came from the televote.
