We have another Eurovision 2024 entry revealed. After being internally selected to represent Slovenia in Malmö, Raiven’s entry “Veronika” has now been revealed.
Familiar names on the songwriting credits
Veronika waqs composed by Raiven alongisde, Peter Khoo, Martin Bezjak, Danilo Kapel, Bojan Cvjetićanin, with the lyrics written by Raiven alongside Klavdija Kopina, Bojan Cvjetićanin. Looking through the credits, the main name that pops out is Bojan Cvjetićanin, who is the frontman of Joker Out, which represented Slovenia in last year’s competition.
In the lead-up to the release of “Veronika”, Raiven talked about the making of the song:
‘The song was not written with the idea of going to Eurovision. When creating it, I focused primarily on the dramatic quality, which is key to telling Veronika’s story effectively. I wanted her story to not only be expressed but also resonate with the year 2024. The idea that she needed music, which was just right – cinematic and contemporary – was present throughout the creative process.’
Furthermore, Raiven mentioned about finding inspiration for “Veronika” when she was researching about iconic women and their fate, specifically Veronika Deseniška:
‘I don’t think this kind of song needs English for the Eurovision performance. I am convinced that both the story and the music are strong and expressive enough that their essence and emotional depth will be perceived and understood even by non-Slovenian speakers.’
Slovenia’s Eurovision Journey
In 1993, Slovenia made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest with 1X Band and the song “Tih deževen dan”, which placed 22nd. Since their debut, they have participated 27 times – of which, 15 were where they qualified for the Grand Final.
Slovenia’s recent Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Joker Out, who sang the song “Carpe Diem”. Performing at the second semi-final, the band placed 5th, therefore qualifying for the final for the first time since 2019. At the final, Slovenia finished in 21st place, receiving 78 points. Of these, 33 came from the jury and 45 from the televote.
