Raiven, who will represent Slovenia at Eurovision 2024

Please note that this is breaking news, and we are updating the article as we receieve further information.

RTVSLO has revealed that Raiven will succeed Joker Out and represent Slovenia at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö with her song “Veronika”.

How Raiven was chosen

Raiven’s participation was announced at the SNG Opera House in Ljubljana on Tuesday (December 12). Before she was announced to be taking part, Slovenia’s Head of Delegation Maša Kljun gave more information on how she came to be the representative.

We chose in such a way that it is not only important that someone really wants to go there, but that someone may already have a story with which they will travel there. As we know, Eurovision is also watched and takes place very intensively on social networks.

More details regarding Raiven’s song for Malmö have already been made public. The title of the song she will sing at Eurovision has been revealed as “Veronika”. The song tells the story of Veronika Deseniška, a woman who was suspected of witchcraft – whose story is well known across Slovenia.

Speaking about being selected, Raiven herself said:

Representing Slovenia at Eurovision is a stepping stone I envision for my career’s progression. When I told my mother I was going to Eurovision, she said she knew I would be standing on that stage one day. She knew it since the first time we were watching this music spectacle together – I was five years old.

Her song for the Contest is set to be presented on the 20th of January. The premiere will be shown in a dedicated show to Raiven and her attempts to go to the Contest.

Who is Raiven?

Raiven is mostly known for taking part in Slovenia’s Eurovision Selection EMA three times (2016, 2017 and 2019), and has released an album (Magneta) and an EP (REM), both of which have been recognised by awards and critical and public acclaim.

Raiven’s announcement as Slovenia’s entrant marks a sharp change in direction for the country, as RTVSLO had previously announced they would return to hosting a national final two months ago. With Raiven’s reveal, this marks only the fourth time in the country’s 28 Eurovision participations that no national final will take place at all. As previously reported, Raiven’s entry will be revealed on the second half of January 2024.

Slovenia’s Eurovision Journey

In 1993, Slovenia made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest with 1X Band and the song “Tih deževen dan”, which placed 22nd. Since their debut, they have participated 27 times – of which, 15 were where they qualified for the Grand Final.

Slovenia’s recent Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Joker Out, who sang the song “Carpe Diem”. Performing at the second semi-final, the band placed 5th, therefore qualifying for the final for the first time since 2019. At the final, Slovenia finished in 21st place, receiving 78 points. Of these, 33 came from the jury and 45 from the televote.
