🇳🇴 Voting for Melodi Grand Prix 2024 Final to be modified

The running order for the Melodi Grand Prix 2024 final

Ahead of this Saturday’s final NRK has announced changes to the voting in Melodi Grand Prix; Norway’s selection for the Eurovision Song Contest.

The New Voting System

In previous editions of Melodi Grand Prix the voting system had an equal weighting of a public televote, and a professional jury. In the forthcoming edition this will be changed to give more say to the general public; by giving a new weighting of 60/40 in favour of the televote. This voting announcement echoes what the Norwegian delegation had previously stated following the 2023 edition of Eurovision in Liverpool. With the Norwegian delegation announcing they wanted the general public to have more say in deciding who wins Eurovision. Though such a desire was not achieved, and the current voting system remains in place for the 2024 edition of the contest.

The announcement of changes in Melodi Grand Prix’s voting comes during a spate of announcements regarding this year’s contest. With NRK confirming the running order of this year’s final only days ago. Additionally, it was announced that finalist Gåte must rewrite the lyrics of their entry ahead of the final.

What is Melodi Grand Prix?

Melodi Grand Prix is the Norwegian method of selection for Eurovision. This national final selection method is over 60 years old. The only year where Melodi Grand Prix has not taken place was 2002, when Norway were relegated from the Eurovision Song Contest. Melodi Grand Prix had undertaken a few different formats. The changes in format have mainly taken place in the last few years, since 2020.

Norway’s Eurovision Journey

The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 61 times, and made the Grand Final 58 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.

Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Alessandra with the song “Queen of Kings”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 5th in the Grand Final, receiving 268 points, 52 of which from the jury and 216 from televoters.
