Ahead of the fourth semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2024 taking place in Eskilstuna, Jazzi had the chance to speak with duo SCARLET about their participation, as well as bringing something a little different to the Melodifestivalen stage.
Hi SCARLET, I would just like to start things off by asking you to introduce yourselves?
Hi =) We are SCARLET. A cute little metal duo consisting Scarlet and Thirsty
Before we continue, let’s start with a quick icebreaker by just asking if there is one thing about yourself that not many people know about?
Yes. We like to play hide and seek before shows.
For newer Eurovision fans, this will be the first time they will get to know you, could you please tell us a bit more about yourselves?
Absolutely. We are a skeleton and a vampire who met many years ago and have been inseparable ever since. We write, sing and perform within the hard rock and metal genre. And we are so happy to be a part of this new adventure!
Let’s move on to Eurovision. Can I start off by asking, what made you want to participate in the Swedish selection?
We want to bring something new to the competition. A little more of a theatrical performance 😉
You will be participating with the song “Circus X”, what the song is about and what would you like the audience to feel when listening to it?
The song is about being trapped in some kind of unwanted situation. That could look different for people. We really think that every person that hears the song will put their own meaning to it.
What would going to Eurovision and represent Sweden mean to you?
A great honour of course. To be chosen to represent your country.
Asking more about Eurovision, what is your earliest memory of the competition and what is your favourite Eurovision song (from Sweden or from another country)
Earliest memory is hard to say. Favorite Eurovision song would be “Heroes” by Måns Zelmerlöw
When I am sending this, we are only a few weeks away from your heat in this year’s Melodifestivalen. How are the preparations going for that?
Yeeees!! And it SO exciting! The preparations are going amazing actually! Dance rehearsals, voice rehearsals, outfits and more.
What would it mean for you to make the Melodifestivalen final?
A lot! We are such a different act and it would mean so much knowing that people like that kind of different.
On your website your music style is described as metal, are there any artists from that genre that inspire your music?
No, not really. The inspiration comes from life itself. Not any other artist.
Metal isn’t a genre we see a lot at Melodifestivalen or Eurovision, how important is it to show off your style of music to such a broad audience in Sweden?
It’s important to show our music style in this type of platform so we can inspire especially a younger audience to go their own way, trying new things in life
What is one thing that you have learnt from taking part in the national final, that you will take with you going forward?
That all music genres are needed in this kind of show/competition. People are different and all should be represented.
Thank you for this opportunity, and good luck in Melodifestivalen 2024, Is there anything you would like to say to the International viewers over at That Eurovision Site?
Thank you so much! We really hope to see yall in Malmö, Sweden later this spring! 😉
Who are SCARLET?
Scarlet are described as a metal duo from Sweden They are a hard rock group who are known for their distinctive skull makeup. Scarlet has already released numerous singles since 2018 as well as an album “Obey The Queen” in 2020. Recently the duo toured Europe as a support act for Melodifestivalen 2023 and 2024 finalists Smash Into Pieces.
Sweden’s Eurovision Journey
In 1958, Sweden made their debut in the Eurovision Song Contest, with Alice Babs representing them with the song “Lilla stjärna” which placed fourth. Since their debut, the Scandinavian nation has managed to win seven times (1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015 and 2023).
In 2023, Loreen returned to represent Sweden, who won the 2012 edition of the competition. She competed with the song “Tattoo”, which managed to qualify for the Grand Final, and placed 1st with 583 points. Loreen won the jury vote, accruing 340 points from the jury, earning an additional 243 points from the televote. This now means Sweden matches Ireland for the record of most wins in Eurovision history.
