What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the first Semi-Final of Dora 2024?

Jazzi (“tišine”): This is a ballad where the one thing that stands out to me is Eugen’s voice. I think there is also massive staging potential for a song like this so I am excited to see what he does in show tonight. This is really a ballad that starts off quite slow but really builds as it goes on. Then towards the end, we have some quieter vocals again which is a bit “Arcade-esqe”. This definitely has a Balkan feel to it enough to be unique however, and it’s been a long time since we saw a Balkan ballad in the Eurovision final.

Daniel (“Babaroga”): In what for me is a lacklustre semi final the unbridled chaos of Let 3 is always going to stand out, and has done so in a great way. You’re never going to listen to it for pitch perfect vocals, but Let 3 are still great artists regardless and it’s a really fun song

Rory (“More”): Lana is bringing a nice fresh rock feel to Dora with this song. It really shows off her vocal range by taking on a nice fresh, modern production that sounds really commercially friendly. Lyrically, it’s also strong and it lends itself to big and impactful staging so depending on what ideas she has, this could be a real dark horse

Croatia’s Eurovision Journey

Croatia has been a part of the Eurovision family since 1961, as part of Yugoslavia. Ten Croatian artists went on to represent Yugoslavia in the Contest – the most famous of which being Riva, who gave Yugoslavia its only win in 1989. The 1990 Contest was held in Zagreb as a tribute to their Croatian heritage.

Croatia debuted in the Contest as an independent nation in 1993 with the band Put and their song “Don’t Ever Cry”. Since then, Croatia has gone on to score as high as 4th place in 1996 and 1999. For 2023, Croatia chose the well-known band Let 3 to represent the nation in Liverpool with their song “Mama ŠČ!”. Performing in the first semi-final, Croatia qualified for the Grand Final for the first time since 2017. In the Grand Final, the band finished in 13th place, with a total of 123 points – 11 of which coming from juries, whilst another 112 came from the televote.
