What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the first Semi-Final of Festival da Canção 2024?

Angus (“Grito”): Gently building from haunting to dramatic, this track pulls you in and takes you on an emotional journey. The cathartic vocal build-up towards the end followed by a return to a more quiet outro to the track makes it a great complete package.

Jazzi (“Aguà): I really enjoy this indie track. it has quite lowkey verses before speeding up in the chorus. The verses have a real opportunity to build intimacy on stage, some this Portugal does well. The chorus has enough power and enough of a hook to make this memorable and make this stand out in the contest this year.

Kittens (“Pelas Costuras”): In a field of mostly chilled anthems, ‘Pelas Costuras’ really stands out. The thumping dance beat, rock elements with a slightly sinister choral dark undertone – I can only hope it makes it to the final and is staged as dramatically as it deserves to be.

Portugal’s Eurovision Journey

Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 54 times – appearing the final 45 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.

Portugal’s most recent participation was with Mimicat with the song “Ai, coração”. Mimicat managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, she finished in 23rd place. She received a total of 59 points, of which 43 points came from the jury and 16 points came the televote.
