Sigga Ózk- “Um allan alheiminn”:

Bashar Murad – “Vestrið villt”:

What did some of our team members have to say about their favourite songs from the Semi-Final of Söngvakeppnin 2024?

Kittens (“Ró”): While a bit more chill than the rest of the selection, RÓ caught my attention because of that kicking D&B beat that kicks in during the chorus and carries it into cute lil bop. Maybe unassuming at the start, it definitely brings the drama with those choral elements, while it slowly worms its way into your brain over time. With all of these elements combined in an infectious manner, it’s no wonder RÓ is one of my faves this season.

Jazzi (“Um allan alheiminn”): This is a song I have really started listening to more in the last week or so. This is just super fun and enjoyable to listen to. Is it a little 2015? Sure but I do really like it and am excited to see what stage show Sigga puts with this song.

Rory (“Vestrið villt”): First off, it’s worth noting the complete shift in genre for Bashar compared to his previous work. And as a Palestinian who has come to Iceland to compete, I have to give kudos to him for his ability to sing in Icelandic, a language which definitely is not his mother tongue. Sonically, this immediately stands out from the rest of the competition, but still keeps elements of Bashar’s Middle Eastern heritage. It’s definitely one to watch, as we know Bashar is a clear visual artist. To say I’m excited is an understatement!

Iceland’s Eurovision Journey

Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.

Iceland’s most recent representative on the Eurovision stage was Diljá, singing “Power” in Liverpool. At the close of the voting, Diljá finished 11th in the semi-final with 44 points from the televote. This meant that Iceland missed out on qualifying for the final.
