The Netherlands at Eurovision 2024
After a “careful and multi-phase process” which included over 600 submissions and a live auditions phase, the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS selected Joost Klein as their entry for Eurovision 2024 in Malmö. On Joost’s selection, the selection committee chair, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen said “With his enormous creativity, we think Joost can put on a great show in a totally original way, and that the Netherlands and Europe are in for a positive surprise.”
Who is Joost Klein?
26-year-old Joost Klein is a rapper and singer from the Friesland province of the Netherlands, and is best known for his EDM and techno-style music that has already amassed a huge domestic and international following, with his song “Friesenjung” reaching the top of the German and Austrian charts. His last album “Fryslân“, reached number 2 on the Dutch album charts.
Joost lost both of his parents as a child, which inspired songs such as “Florida 2009” and “Mama en papa” – as well as his Eurovision song being dedicated to his father.
The Netherlands’ Eurovision Journey
The Netherlands are one of the founding countries of the ESC. They performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of “De Vogels van Holland” is unknown, the Netherlands have clocked 5 wins, with their most recent in 2019. However, the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest-ever non-qualification streak in the semi-final era – they missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005-2012.
The most recent Dutch entry to the Contest was in 2023. Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper represented the nation with “Burning Daylight” – written by Eurovision winner Duncan Laurence. The Netherlands failed to qualify for the final in Liverpool, placing 13th with a total of 7 points from the televote.
