Icelandic broadcaster RÚV have confirmed today that Hera Björk will represent Iceland at Eurovision 2024 with the song “Scared of Heights”

Will participate in Malmö

Following the finals of Söngvakeppnin, which took place on 9th March 2024, Hera Bjork was declared the winner. However, earlier this year Iceland had declared that their national selection Söngvakeppnin 2024, would be decoupled from their Eurovision 2024 participation. This meant that their participation was still uncertain.

However, RÚV have now confirmed they will participate in this years Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö with the winner of Söngvakeppnin 2024, Hera Björk and her song “Scared of Heights”.

Hera Björk has previously represented Iceland at Eurovision in 2010 with her song “Je Ne Sais Quoi”. The song qualified 3rd in the semi-final and reached 19th place in the final with 41 points.

Discussions about the voting process

Following Söngvakeppnin 2024, several issues were reported with the voting process, however these have been dismissed by RÚV as being insignificant to the final result.

One of the songwriters of “Scared of Heights”, Ásdís María Viðarsdóttir, has chosen to not accept the answers from RÚV about the voting process. As a result she will not take part in following the song to Eurovision. The producers of Söngvakeppnin have stated that they will respect Ásdís’ decision not to take part. However this will not affect the song participating in Eurovision for Iceland.

RÚV have also said that should Hera not be available they would not have sent an alternative track from Söngvakeppnin 2024. This means they would have withdrawn if the decision was made to not send Hera Björk.

Iceland’s Eurovision journey

Iceland made its debut on the Eurovision stage in 1986, finishing 16th with the song “Gleðibankinn” (Bank of Fun) by ICY. In their 35 appearances, Iceland has finished in top 10 an impressive 7 times. Their best result to date is second place, which they have achieved twice. The first time was in 1999, where Selma Björnsdóttir received 146 points for her performance of “All Out of Luck”. The second time was in 2009, with Yohanna singing “Is It True” and receiving 218 points.

Iceland’s most recent representative on the Eurovision stage was Diljá, singing “Power” in Liverpool. At the close of the voting, Diljá finished 11th in the semi-final with 44 points from the televote. This meant that Iceland missed out on qualifying for the final.
