Today it has been announced that the Swedish entry for Eurovision 2024, “Unforgettable” by Marcus and Martinus, will open the Eurovision Grand Final in Malmö on the 11th May 2024.
Positioning the host entry
As the hosts, Sweden will automatically qualify for the final. Their position was randomly drawn during the Head of Delegation meeting today by Andrew Cartmell, the Executive Producer of last years’ Eurovision in Liverpool. This means that the host entry will perform first and will be opening the Grand Final show in May.
Marcus and Martinus won the 2024 edition of Sweden’s Melodifestivalen on Saturday, winning over the other entrants with a total of 177 points.
Earlier today it was revealed that the host and ‘big five’ entries will also perform at the Semi-Finals. This is a change from the usual format where they only performed at the Grand Final. Because of this change, Sweden will also be performing in Semi-Final 1, alongside Germany and the United Kingdom.
Sweden’s Eurovision Journey
In 1958, Sweden made their debut in the Eurovision Song Contest, with Alice Babs representing them with the song “Lilla stjärna” which placed fourth. Since their debut, the Scandinavian nation has managed to win seven times (1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015 and 2023).
In 2023, Loreen returned to represent Sweden, who won the 2012 edition of the competition. She competed with the song “Tattoo”, which managed to qualify for the Grand Final, and placed 1st with 583 points. Loreen won the jury vote, accruing 340 points from the jury, and earning an additional 243 points from the televote. This now means Sweden matches Ireland for the record of most wins in Eurovision history.
