As we now have the songs competing for this year’s competition in Malmö, the team at That Eurovision Site will be reacting to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2024. The next entry we will be reacting to is Portugal, who will be competing in this year’s competition with “Grito” by iolanda.

Our thoughts on “Grito”

In this series, we will be providing our opinions in two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members of the team will be giving their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be giving his reaction to “Grito”.

What did the other members of the team think of “Grito”?

Georgia: Portugal doing what Portugal does best. A captivating song in Portuguese somewhat in the vein of Saudade, Saudade, to me. I hope it’ll be able to capture some of the same magic that Maro was able to capture in Turin two years ago. I think it does have the ability to stand out in Malmö as there are very few female ballads this year, but at the same time, I fear that it may get lost in all of the upbeat, high-tempo numbers of semi-final one. I hope not, as this is one of my favourites this year, but I fear it could happen.

Daniel: They’ve done it again. The country that does female ballads better than anyone else in the world have pulled off another corker. iolanda’s performance for me is Eurovision ready, vocally she is magnificent, the staging works to elevate the song, especially the shifting of the aspect ratio of the camera shots as she nails the high notes. I don’t necessarily think it will get the best result Portugal have seen in recent years, but I really don’t think the country will let them expect that. Their Maro, Mimicat and now iolanda streak is shaping up to be one of my favourite runs of entries in the contest.

Portugal’s Eurovision Journey

Portugal debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest with António Calvário’s “Oração” in 1964. Since then, Portugal has participated in the competition 54 times – appearing the final 45 times. Their only win in the competition came in 2017 with Salvador Sobral, performing his heart-wrenching song “Amar Pelos Dois”.

Portugal’s most recent participation was with Mimicat with the song “Ai, coração”. Mimicat managed to qualify for the Grand Final and once there, she finished in 23rd place. She received a total of 59 points, of which 43 points came from the jury and 16 points came the televote.
