In their interview with Rory, Joost Klein talked about the meaning of his song and the incorporation of gabber into the song. He also gives his strangest Duolingo sentence he has ever discovered, after partnering with the language-learning app.
Who is Joost Klein?
Joost Klein is a 26-year-old singer born in Leeuwarden in Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. Joost’s career began at a young age when he became a Youtuber under the name EenhoornJoost, which grew to have millions of views. At the age of 12, Klein sadly lost both of his parents within the space of one year – an event that continues to filter into his work today. In 2016, he released his first EP Dakloos, which instantly became a hit in his native country. His most successful song, “Friesenjung”, was the first song of his to chart internationally – becoming a summer hit in neighbouring Germany.
Joost’s song for Eurovision – “Europapa” – was written by Joost himself, alongside Donnie, Dylan van Dael, Paul Elstak, Teun de Kruif, Thijmen Melissant and Tim Haars.
The Netherlands’ Eurovision journey
The Netherlands are one of the founding countries of the ESC, having performed the very first song ever on the Eurovision stage back in 1956. While the result of “De Vogels van Holland” is unknown, the Netherlands have clocked 5 wins, with their most recent in 2019. However the Netherlands are also known to have had the longest ever non qualification streak in the semi-final era – they missed out on the final a whopping 8 times between 2005-2012.
The most recent Dutch entry to the Contest was in 2023, when Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper represented the nation with “Burning Daylight” – written by Eurovision winner Duncan Laurence. The Netherlands failed to qualify for the final in Liverpool, placing 13th with a total of 7 points from the televote.
