With the Eurovision Song Contest just three months away, extra security measures are to be implemented around Basel in time for the show.
Security measures to be round-the-clock
Swiss journal SwissInfo reported that security guards and other forms of personnel will be patrolling the streets of Basel. On top this, a 24/7 hotline will be set up as part of the city’s efforts to keep the city safe.
As well as increased the police presence, hospitality staff will be hired during the two weeks of the Contest. To maximise the safety of viewers in bars and restaurants, spiking test strips will be handed out across the city.
Speaking in an interview with Swiss newspaper Sonntagsblick, Stephanie Eymann, Security Director of Basel City, said:
Hatred towards minorities, transphobia, sexual harassment and other forms of violence have no place at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Basel.
As well as this, Eymann added that ongoing “geopolitical events” were also a focus of the city’s security measures. She added that police forces from Malmö had visited Basel in order to help with advice ahead of the event.
The story of Eurovision 2025 so far…
Switzerland will be hosting the 69th edition of the competition following Nemo’s historic win at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö. A few weeks after their win, Reto Peritz, and Moritz Stadler, was announced as the Executive Producers, with the other roles revealed in July 2024.
Basel, Bern & Biel/Bienne, Geneva, and Zurich submitted bids to host next year’s competition, with Basel and Geneva being shortlisted as the final two cities. After the shortlist, it was revealed that Basel will host Eurovision 2025, at St. Jakobshalle with the shows taking place on May 13, 15 and 17.
