As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Austria, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Wasted Love” by JJ.

Our thoughts on “Wasted Love”

In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Shiloh will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Wasted Love”

What did the other team members think of “Wasted Love”?

Tim: Okay, I want to start by saying #FilipinoPride, I am thankful to Austria for making the Filipino fans represented in the competition. Second, OMG the vocal range that JJ has is phenomenal, and it would not surprise me if Austria continues its qualification streak in this year’s competition.

Jonathan: This is a exceptionally well produced pop song sung by an incredibly talented singer that subverts expectations and crescendos into something really memorable. In Eurovision this is usually enough to justify a song being in the running to win. My only concern is that Wasted Love is clearly trying to ride the coattails of last year’s winner, ‘The Code’ by Nemo – will audiences be in the mood for something different this year?

Molly: This song is very well done and even though it may not be entirely to my taste I can still appreciate the talent that went into this song. JJ’s voice is beautiful, and the fact that he has beautifully incorporated his opera talents is unique to me. This will do well with the Juries however Nemo won only last year so it will be interesting to see if the televote will still be interested in this style.

Austria’s Eurovision Journey

In 1957, Austria made their debut into the Eurovision Song Contest, where Bob Martin represented the landlocked nation with the song “Wohin, kleines Pony?”. At the close of voting, it managed to place 10th overall. Since their debut, Austria has participated 56 times (being in the final 49 times), and have won the competition on two occasions in 1966 and 2014.

For 2024, Kaleen was internally selected to represent Austria with their song “We Will Rave”. In Malmö, Kaleen qualified for the final, where she went on to finish in 24th place with 24 points. Of these, 5 points came from the televote and another 19 came from the juries.
