As the songs competing for this year’s competition in Basel continue to be selected, the team at That Eurovision Site will react to the entries that will be participating at Eurovision 2025. The next entry we will react to is Croatia, which will be competing in this year’s competition with “Poison Cake” by Marko Bošnjak.
Our thoughts on “Poison Cake”
In this series, we will provide our opinions via two methods. One of our team members will be reacting on video, which you can see below, whilst up to three members will give their written opinion on the entry. Tim will be on the main seat and will be showing his reaction to “Poison Cake”
What did the other team members think of “Poison Cake”?
Rory: When you’re the country that finished as the runner-up of the previous year’s Contest, it can be easy to lean into a similar formula. However, “Poison Cake” is bold and takes a risk that Croatia has not sent in a very long time. Marko is a really charismatic performer with a powerful voice. You cannot deny that he has stage presence, and it’s this charm that is going to carry him to getting a good result in Basel. The staging in its current state are rather messy, but this is easily fixable for Eurovision, so I’m excited to see what HRT bring out for Marko!
Molly: The song feels so disjointed to me which made me struggle to connect to the song however there are creative elements within the staging and the performance itself that I enjoyed. The energy showed on stage helped elevate the song for me. In Eurovision, there are vocal elements that would need to be improved for example the high note that Marko struggled to hit. The song is unique so it may do well in the sense that it doesn’t have much major competition within its style.

Croatia’s Eurovision Journey
Croatia has been a part of the Eurovision family since 1961, as part of Yugoslavia. Ten Croatian artists went on to represent Yugoslavia in the Contest – the most famous of which being Riva, who gave Yugoslavia its only win in 1989. The 1990 Contest was held in Zagreb as a tribute to their Croatian heritage.
Croatia debuted in the Contest as an independent nation in 1993 with the band Put and their song “Don’t Ever Cry”. Since then, Croatia has gone on to score as high as 2nd place in 2024. For 2024, Croatia chose Baby Lasagna to represent the nation in Malmö with their song “Rim Tim Tagi Dim”. Performing in the first semi-final, Croatia qualified for the Grand Final, winning the semi-final in the process. In the Grand Final, Baby Lasagna finished in 2nd place, with a total of 547 points – 210 of which coming from juries, whilst another 337 came from the televote. This was the highest televoting score in the Grand Final of the 2024 contest.
