Norwegian media outlets are buzzing with speculation that Eurovision legend Alexander Rybak may compete in Melodi Grand Prix 2026.

What’s fueling the rumours

Rybak, who scored a record-breaking win for Norway in 2009 with “Fairytale” and returned to Eurovision in 2018 (placing 15th), posted on Instagram about celebrating the new year with a new album, teasing “Get ready 2026 (coming January 19)”. That date also happens to be when NRK will officially unveil the complete lineup of artists competing in Melodi Grand Prix 2026.

This coincidence has sparked widespread discussion in Norway and the broader Eurovision community about whether Rybak might be one of the entrants fighting for the chance to represent his country once again.

No confirmation yet

Neither Rybak nor Melodi Grand Prix organisers have confirmed his participation. Music Manager for the show, Tarjei Strøm, told TV2 :

“We don’t comment on artist rumors before the launch, but it’s clear that the rumor mill is already well underway – and I think that’s great fun. We have a wonderful mix of artists that we have been working with for several months now, and that we are very proud of. It’s just a matter of speculating further and really starting to enjoy.”

Norway’s Eurovision journey

The Scandinavian nation made its debut in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1960, with Nora Brockstedt and the song “Voi Voi”, which placed 4th. Since their debut, they have participated 62 times and made the Grand Final 59 of these. In addition, Norway has won the competition three times – in 1985, 1995, and 2009.

Norway’s latest Eurovision participation saw them being represented by Kyle Alessandro with the song “Lighter”. After qualifying for the final, Norway placed 18th in the Grand Final, receiving 89 points, 22 of which from the jury and 67 from televoters.
