In the new interview, Rory and Elpo speak about the influence of London and electronic music on their style. As well as this, they speak about the decision to sing in Latvian and the rise of the Latvian language within the domestic market. They also chat about Amanda’s secret Eurovision connection and how they are using Supernova as a means to share their name and become more well-known within the Latvian music scene.

Who are Elpo?

Elpo is an electronic duo made up of Mārtiņš Makreckis and Amanda Bašmakova. The band first formed back in late 2023 and released their first mini-album “Rožu dārzs” shortly afterwards. Over time, the band began to hone their craft and were recognised for their experimentation, winning a nomination at the Latvian-based GAMMA Awards for Electronic Dance Music. The band is launching their first full album in February, where their Supernova entry “Blakus” will be released. The song was written by the pair themselves.

Latvia’s Eurovision journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and managed to win in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga in the process. Latvia also managed to finish in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Tautumeitas, who performed “Bur man laimi”. Latvia successfully qualified from the second semi-final for the second year in a row. In the Grand Final, Tautumeitas finished in 13th place with 158 points. Of these points, 42 were from the public vote, and 116 were from the national juries.
