We at That Eurovision Site will be ranking national finals throughout this coming season. The next national final that the team have taken a closer look at is Supernova, which will take place on the 14th of February. Supernova will select the Eurovision representative for Latvia in Vienna.

And what were the teams thoughts on the national final as a whole?

Samantha: Overall I think that the right contestants made it through to the final but one of the biggest robberies has to be Honey Blue and I am genuinely so confused as to why they didn’t make it through to the final. Vestnieks also deserved a spot in the final. All the artists have staged their performances quite well in my opinion especially Kautkaili and Elpo. Some performances however left me a bit disappointed. LEGZDINA in particular had so much potential, yet the staging (or rather the lack of) just let the song down in my opinion. As for the winner, it still feels completely open. I don’t think we have a clear standout who could confidently bring Latvia a top‑10 result in Vienna.

Kittens: It’s always hard when it’s 24 artists down to 10. I do think though that there’s a reasonably good set here, given that I didn’t really enjoy the selection that much as a whole. I don’t really see any single song here that could make a big impact at Eurovision – there’s a lot of cute songs here but no particular standout for me. It will be very interesting to see what gets picked in the end – and we just hope that it’s not something too beige.

What is Supernova?

With the exception of 2021, where Samanta Tina was internally reselected following the cancellation of the 2020 contest, Latvia has always used a national final to select its Eurovision representative. Since 2015, this has been “Supernova”. In recent years, Supernova has usually been made up of two shows, a semi-final and a final. In recent years, around 15 artists have taken part in the semi-final with around 10 artists advancing to the final. The final results of Supernova consist of a combination of a jury vote and the televote, at a 50-50% split.

Latvia’s Eurovision Journey

Latvia made their Eurovision debut in 2000, finishing 3rd with “My Star” by Brainstorm. They have performed at every contest since and managed to win in 2002. Marie N sang “I Wanna,” scoring 176 points and bringing Eurovision to Riga in the process. Latvia also managed to finish in the top 10 two more times, in 2005 and 2015.

Latvia’s most recent entry on the Eurovision stage was Tautumeitas, who performed “Bur man laimi”. Latvia successfully qualified from the second semi-final for the second year in a row. In the Grand Final, Tautumeitas finished in 13th place with 158 points. Of these points, 42 were from the public vote, and 116 were from the national juries.
