Romania have confirmed their intention to participate at the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, due to be held in Bulgaria. The Romanian broadcaster TVR announced they will participate in the Contest, following a vote by the Board of Directors.
TVR confirms participation
Romanian broadcaster TVR has announced today that they have approved the country’s participation at Eurovision 2027. The decision was made via a vote, held by the Board of Directors at TVR. The news comes following Alexandra Căpitănescu’s success at the Contest in Vienna, equalling Romania’s best placement record of third in the Grand Final (2005 and 2010).
In a press release, TVR stated that confirming the country’s participation in the Contest at this early stage makes it possible to attract the best songwriting and artistic talent to their selection process. The broadcaster also hinted at the return of their national final as the process to select their representative, indicating that confirming participation now allows the scheduling and planning needed for a “competitive national final”.
For TVR, participation in the competition represents a strategic project aimed at promoting Romanian music, supporting emerging artists, and strengthening Romania’s image on the international stage.
Romania’s Eurovision journey
Romania joined the Eurovision family in the Eastern wave of enlargement, making their debut in 1994. Their entry – Dan Bittman’s “Dincolo de nori” – finished in 21st place with a total of 14 points. At the introduction of semi-finals, Romania found their stride and were present in every Eurovision Grand Final until 2018. Romania’s best result in the contest is third place, scored three times, in 2005 and 2010 and 2026 respectively.
In 2026, Romania returned to the competition after a not competing since 2023. They were represented by Alexandra Căpitănescu after she won their national final Selecția Națională with her song “Choke Me”. Performing at the second semi-final in Vienna, Romania managed to qualify for the final. At the close of voting in the final, Romania finished in third place, scoring 296 points, with 64 points coming from the jury and 232 from the televote. This equalled Romania’s best ever placement at The Eurovision Song Contest.
